Workshop: Developing Radial Nebari

Split into two sections, members can choose which one they prefer. The club will provide tiles, tools, and trident maple seedlings for this workshop.

Section 1: Utilizing a tourniquet to develop radial nebari

In this workshop we will use a tile with a hole drilled through the center to set up a ground layering system. A seedling is thread thorugh the hole in the tile and allowed to grow freely. If done correctly, the tree will ground layer above the tile creating perfect radial nebari. This workshop has been done in the past with Zelkova seedlings and was very well received. If anyone still has their tree from a previous workshop please bring it to show the group. Plastic nursery pots will be availalbe for this workshop but if you would prefer something else please bring it or buy it at Timberwinds.

Section 2: Applying root grafts

To acheive full 360 degree nebari, trees often need a little nudge in the correct direction. One way to fill in areas lacking roots are to apply root grafts. Similar to foliage grafts, successful root grafts provide instant roots right where they are needed, greatly accelerating the development process. In this workshop we will provide the tools and expertise for applying root grafts. Members should bring in their own tree to graft. The club will have trident seedlings available but if you would like to graft a different species, feel free to bring in your own seedlings as well.
